I grew up on a farm, so I distinctly remember the day we "got" internet. I saw the internet as a way of helping me to connect to my friends outside of school. Back then i thought dial up internet was the greatest thing, even though it made that horrible noise when you were attempting to connect. I would often use MSN to talk with my friends, and I thought it was awesome. It was a different form of communication, other than using the phone, and I was fascinated with the concept of talking instantly through text, via the internet. I think perhaps thats why my generation also has such a fascination with text messaging. I remember when i got my own computer. It was a handy down from my dad. It was a huge PC and took up most of my desk area. To be completely honest, out of all my first memories with using a computer and the internet, none of them had to do with doing school work. I remember MSN, listening to music, playing on paint, changing my background a million times. I remember trying to help the rest of my family use computers because I was learning so much more about them at school than they were by just being at home.
I think technology and the internet are growing at such an exponential rate that there is constantly a shift. Every day our experiences with technology change. We experience different ways to use technology or new technology comes out and we are always adapting to how these technologies can benefit or help us. I think that's the difference between teenagers today and myself when I was a teenager. Back then I had limited access to the internet and technologies (computer, mp3 player, dial up internet etc), but now a days it's seems that the access to technologies has become better, thus allowing students today more choices of what technologies they want to use, when they want to use them, where they want to use them, and for what purpose.
